At many times in a person’s life when they are left pondering the essence of human nature. What is it that drives us to the allure of forbidden fruits? Are we attracted to a certain idea just because it is a taboo? Take the film Half Nelson for example. It follows the story of a drug addict school teacher and his relationship with one of the students. It’s a good one, but its not my point, I did however found myself watching one scene in particular over and over again. It was this scene, which sparks my thought process about the above. Being a film which demotes drugs, its terribly beautiful and rarely would you find a scene in a movie where the music and visuals work in such perfect unity. So special is it that without dialogue the scene communicates the heartbreak of human turmoil but yet the audience can’t help but feel it’s attractive in some peculiar way. Are we in love with the idea of self destruction if you like.. Is it so bad to feel down? Is that why the character can’t kick his habit?

I was writing an essay until this song by the broken social scene came up and it reminded of this film and this scene.
